Kargil (8200 ft asl) is one of the coldest regions in India where there is active population of about 100,000 and lies on the LoC (India / Pakistan Line of Control) and was made famous by the 1999 conflict which escalated in a near war-like situation. Kargil lies on the Kashmir - Ladakh highway 1-D and therefore a strategic stopover. This highway opens around end-April / early-May till end October.
